Plaque at the East end of the Nave of the Church, South Side

Erected
By a few of the settlers
in memory of the late
John Witty
who died Oct. 22, 1873
As a token of their esteem for his liberality
in donating all the land for the Church,
School and Cemetery.

Prepare to meet thy Lord.
I know that my redeemer liveth.

Church Windows

To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Church, in 1933, Memorial Windows replaced the plain glass panes. They were donated by:

William Witty, Bilston Farm, in memory of his father, John Witty and his mother, Charlotte Witty.

Gavin F. Weir, Crosby Farm, in memory of his grandfather, Robert de Vere Weir, his father, Adam Weir and his mother, Alice Sophia Weir.

Henry C. Helgesen, Sherwood Farm, in memory of his father, Hans Larse Helgesen and his mother, Lillian Margaret Helgesen.

Members of the family in memory of William and Elizabeth Fisher of Ferncliffe, Metchosin.

Mrs. Roberta Reid, Glen Rosa, Rocky Point, in memory of her husband, John Dunlop Reid, and her parents, Thomas Reid and Mary Ann Kerr Reid.

The Rev. R. and Lady Emily Walker, Ragley, East Sooke, in memory of their sons, Francis Hugh Seymour Walker and Lionel Reginald Walker.

Mrs. Ella Ashe, Albert Head, in memory of her husband, Gilbert Percy Ashe.

Gifts and Memorials

Portrait of Bishop Hills, presented by Mrs. E. Longland, Holland Ave., Victoria, in 1966.

The Brass Cross at the Altar was given by Mrs. G.F. Weir and dedicated on June 20th 1971.

A Cross given by Lady Emily Walker in 1913 is now used in the Baptistry.

The Brass Vases were presented by Mrs. Ada Pierce in memory of her husband, Henry Greville Pierce.

The Brass Missal stand was given by the Junior Branch of W.A. in 1923. Mrs. F.G. Dobie was the donor of the Brass Candle Lighter and extinguisher in 1960.

There is a Brass Alms Dish upon the Credence table which, together with a set of Silver Communion Vessels, was presented by Mr. Justice A.D. McFarlane and friends in memory of the Rev. W.C. Gemmill.

In 1960, the White Festal Array, comprising Frontal, Super-frontal, Piddle Post and Dossal Curtains, Antipendia, and Book Markers, and the wrought iron Cranes were given in Memory of Gavin F. Weir.

The carved Chair in the Sanctuary was presented in 1933 by John Hamilton Gray, son of Mr. Justice Hamilton Gray.

The Church Banner was made in 1926. It was designed by Archdeacon Laycock; the materials were given by Mrs. H.M. Bolton; Mrs. Pope did the needlework. Mr. F.F. Frudd, who served as People's Warden for twenty-two years, mounted it on the cruciform staff.

Mr. R.F. Mathews presented the Brass Processional Cross in Memory of his wife, Nita.

The Processional Cross made of wood was fashioned and given by an inmate of the correctional institution at William Head in 1961.

The Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge presented a large Bible for the Lectern when the Church was opened for use in 1873. It has since been replaced by one that was once the property of Louisa Snape of Sooke and it in turn was replaced in 1974 by a Revised Standard edition donated by Mr. Harold Walker in memory of his wife.

Mr. E.D. West was the donor, in 1949, of the mortise lock with brass face plates and handles for the main door of the Church. He also gave the clock that is used in the Vestry. It is mounted in a section of very ancient wooden water pipe dug up in Hanworth Road, Hounslow, England, in 1897. These articles were brought from England by Mr. West's father.

The entrance to the churchyard is through wrought iron gates, given in May 1964 by a pioneer resident, the late Mr. Lee Llewellyn Field in memory of the Field family. Mr. Bernard Whitney-Griffiths, son of the longest time resident in the Parish, Mr. William Whitney-Griffiths, is the craftsman who fashioned them.

"Long life to the hearts still beating and peace to the hearts at rest." The ornamental tree on the left was planted in 1933 when the sixtieth anniversary of the laying of the Foundation Stone was observed, by Mrs. F.L. Stephenson who had been present as a child at the first ceremony.

Just beyond the Church door stands an oak tree grown from a seedling that came from the Royal Park at Windsor, England. It commemorates the Coronation of King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth. Under the auspices of the Metchosin Farmers' Institute it was planted on June 25th 1937, by Mr. William Witty, son of John who gave the land. In 1951 the local branch of the Canadian Legion marked the tree with an identifying brass plaque.

The Cenotaph at the roadside, recessed into the churchyard, was placed there in 1953 by local branch of the Canadian Legion

"The ground on which thou standest is holy ground.
Act reverently. Cherish the flowers. This is God's Acre."

These are the words inscribed on a bronze plaque set in a granite stone at the entrance to the church yard. Mr. R.S. Peecock placed it there in 1931 as a memorial to his wife.
